Note:
Karel Appel found immense inspiration in music, leading him to create numerous portraits of musicians he held in high regard. Gustav Mahler's music is saturated with profound emotional expression, as he utilised it as a vehicle to convey intricate human emotions and experiences. Mahler's symphonies frequently exhibit a robust emotional narrative.
Expressing his artistic aspirations, Appel states: "I aimed to paint in a manner akin to their musical creation, incorporating bold accents". Notable figures like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, and Count Basie sought out Appel's studio to be immortalised in his portraits.'/> kavel - Cloudcatalogus
